Eels of Lake Alūksne

Lake Alūksne captivates with its beauty, recreation opportunities and special tastes of fish. One of the most amazing and unique fish in Lake Alūksne is an eel. In the diverse and rich range of fish in the lake, it has a special status, which is given by the mystery associated with the life cycle of the fish and the skills needed to catch it.

The eel becomes the ‘delicacy’ of Lake Alūksne in the hands of skilled local masters, who, using the recipes of their ancestors and special smoking methods, turn the fatty eel into a juicy and mouth-watering speciality with a unique taste. You can look for hot smoked eels in local markets, especially during different festivities, or buy them from the entrepreneur. Do you want to ‘take it into your own hands’? It is allowed to catch eels in Lake Alūksne like any other fish, but you can keep no more than three and the length of the eel must be at least 40 cm. The best months for eel fishing are June and July, and the best time to do it is at night.
