Charm of Alūksne Lake

Alūksne has long captivated visitors with its cultural and historical heritage, landscapes, hospitality, and the majestic Lake Alūksne—Latvia’s 11th-largest lake. Teeming with over 12 fish species and set amidst the picturesque scenery of the Vidzeme region, the lake is steeped in legend and home to four islands: Cepurīte, Garā sala, Tīklu sala, and the largest of them all, Castle Island (Pilssala).

In Alūksne, it is easy to step straight from the town into nature and succumb to the allure of Lake Alūksne—whether by swimming, taking a leisurely boat or pedal boat ride, or—for speed enthusiasts—hopping on a motorboat. You can experience the breathtaking thrill of soaring like a bird above the lake’s waters on the “Zzzippp” zipline. Meanwhile, the Shipboat “Marienburg” offers unforgettable adventures on the water, rich in legendary tales.

For romantics, we recommend taking a sunset boat ride and strolling along the Alūksne Castle Island promenade. Music plays on the Tempļakalns Street pedestrian bridge during the first 15 minutes of every hour, and in the evening, the lighting—playing off the lake’s waves—creates a truly special atmosphere for a walk. Crossing the bridge reveals a view of the illuminated Rotunda on Temple Hill; climb a little higher, catch your breath, and admire the beauty of Lake Alūksne!
