Exciting medieval heritage in Alūksne.

Viens no pamatīgākajiem Alūksnes vēstures stāstiem saistīts ar vareno Alūksnes viduslaiku pili jeb Marienburgas pili Alūksne Medieval Castle or Marienburg Castle, located on the largest island of Lake Alūksne – Castle island.There are several ways to discover and enjoy the special story of Alūksne Medieval Castle, but it will be most fully revealed if you use all of them.

A walk combining the sounds of the lake’s waves, the mystery of the Castle Island and the majesty of the fortress walls is a good way to start getting to know the medieval castle of Alūksne. Going along the walking path around the castle ruins, the fortress will reveal itself from different viewing angles and allow you to feel its former majesty. To get a special atmosphere, you should go for a walk after dark, when the southern wall and the southern tower of the fortress are decorated with light games.

Along with the restoration of the southern tower of the castle, the soul of the castle has returned to it –musical light exposition “MARIENBURG the eighth brother”, in which the history of the castle is reflected in the life story of the eighth brother – a tale created by dramaturge Lauris Gundars, composers and music producers- Sigvards Kļava, Mārtiņš Brauns, Artūrs Maskats.Design concept – design studio H2E. The musical legend, sung by Latvian Song Choir, vtells that the eighth castle tower remembers everything – especially everything since the birth of the Marienburg Castle, from the moment of the birth of Mary’s world to today, to us. It tells about the most important thing – the desire and right to be true, about love that never ends. Visiting the exhibition is organized in 10 sessions per day every 40 minutes.

Master of ceramics Uģis Puzulis jhas given a new meaning to a 17th century plate found in the archaeological excavations of the castle, for which he has made practical replicas. The original fragments of the dish can be seen in the museum exposition, but a modern meal from the beautiful replicas of the 17th century dishes of the Marienburg Palace can be enjoyed in cafe “Benevilla”, where the owners Aina and Aivars Ezeriņi prepare a delicious meal.
