Korneti-Peļļi ravine
One of the longest and most expressive ravines in Latvia is the Korneti-Peļļi ravine in “Veclaicene” protected landscape area, which was formed as a result of the melting of glaciers and determines the terrain, landscape and biodiversity of the area. It consists of a 26km long main bed, in the deepest hollows of which there is a series of 16 small, narrow, long and deep lakes, creating a visually high-value landscape in the Latvian and Estonian parts, which is best enjoyed near Korneti.
You can see some of the lakes in the ravine – Pilskalns Lake with the steepest shore, as well as Dzērve and Ieva Lakes – by climbing the Korneti Sightseeing tower, but you can get to know the picturesque and deepest lake in the series – Raipala Lake by taking a walk along the Raipala Lake hiking trail.. The water in the lakes is warmest in July, and there are swimming areas for summer swimming at Lakes Dzērve, Ieva and Ilgājā. The lakes, on the other hand, start to freeze at the end of November, and most often they are already completely frozen in December, maintaining a solid layer of ice until April, which allows for hiking on the frozen lakes or goice fishing .
